Student Membership

What is Student Membership?

Student membership under the By-Laws of the Association may be granted to students who are approved by the Board of Examiners and who are registered at an approved institution providing social work education. The student, as a member of the Association, is not a registered social worker and is not licensed to practice social work. Students members can, however, learn about and become involved in some of the issues facing the profession.

What Are the Benefits of Student Membership?

As a student member of NSASW you will be provided with:

  1. Opportunities to develop a network of contacts with social workers in different areas of practice.
  2. Receipt of the Association's newsletter, Connection.
  3. Paid subscription to the national journal, The Social Worker, and the CASW Bulletin.
  4. Free registration to the Association's annual conference.
  5. Opportunities to participate in the advancement of social work standards.
  6. Opportunities to become familiar with the professional Code of Ethics and the study of ethical issues.
  7. Opportunities to join other social workers in the review of government and agency social policies.
  8. Opportunities to influence policies, practices and the future direction of the Association.
  9. A reduced membership fee.

Student members are entitled to attend, participate and vote at all meetings of the Association but are not eligible for election to the Council. However, according to the Association By-Laws, a student member may be selected by the student body at the Maritime School of Social Work to represent them on the Council.

To prepare for practice upon graduation, students should be aware of the legal and professional requirements for the practice of social work in the province of Nova Scotia (see Membership).
